I haven’t seen much of John Woo’s work, but I know he’s known for his action sequences. Face/Off and Hard Boiled are great action films, so I’ll check out his latest if I get the chance. Silent Night is his latest American movie, and I have to say, his action skills are still on point. However, overall, it was just okay. It has some good ideas, but something didn’t quite work for me. Here are my thoughts.

After a gang accidentally kills the son of a couple, the husband, Godlock (Joel Kinnaman), decides to go after them. He gets shot in the neck, making him unable to speak. His mission becomes training to take on the gang and seek revenge. The unique thing about this film is that it has no dialogue at all. None of the characters say a word. I liked that, but I wish it was used more creatively. It seemed like Woo just wanted to focus on the action, which was good.

The action set pieces weren’t very original, but they were well-done. There’s a standout fight in a house and a great stairwell scene that kept my attention. However, the film’s good aspects are overshadowed by the sappy backstory. The presentation of his past with his child is a bit cheesy, and there’s a moment at the end that almost made me laugh because it tried too hard to be emotional. The sentimental moments took away from the film and ruined a few scenes.

I like Joel Kinnaman as an actor, and he gives a solid performance here. However, the story and screenplay are thin, and it shows in the final product. Still, if you enjoy action, there’s enough here to satisfy. The lack of dialogue is an interesting idea, but I think this type of film needed some. Silent Night is a bit cheesy at times, but it’s still worth a watch if you’re already interested. It’s in theaters now, and there are worse options out there.
