What If…? Tells the story of various Marvel Cinematic Universe films but, with 1 key twist in the tale that alters all the events that follow, leaving fans with brand new animated adventures with their favorite Marvel superheroes.

The animation is flawless. The action set pieces are awe-inspiring. The humor is on point, like it is in all Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. There are several deeply emotional moments, that will make you tear up. Jeffrey Wright is perfect as The Watcher. The voice acting by the people who replaced the Marvel Cinematic Universe thespians who couldn’t reprise their roles is amazing & they’ve mimicked the original actors’ voices & accents effortlessly.

Episode 1, 7/10: What If… Captain Carter Were the First Avenger? Is just a rehash of Captain America: The First Avenger(2011), by just replacing Steve Rogers(Josh Keaton) with Peggy Carter(Hayley Atwell). The 2011 Captain America origin story is my least favorite movie in the Captain America trilogy. Writer AJ Finn & AC Bradley have done little to rectify that. They just copy pasted the whole movie, but Captain America: The First Avenger(2011) is superior to this episode. Hayley Atwell is spectacular as Peggy Carter/Captain Carter & is the highlight of the episode.

Episode 2, 8/10: What If… T’Challa Became A Star-Lord? Surpasses the show’s first episode. Chadwick Boseman has given us a phenomenal & totally unique portrayal of T’Challa/Star-Lord compared to his role as T’Challa/Black Panther. There’s some humor & heartfelt moments in this episode. The Thanos(Josh Brolin) twist didn’t work for me. Karen Gillan & Michael Rooker are outstanding as Nebula & Yondu, respectively.

Episode 3, 9/10: What If… The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes is a dark take on the origin stories in Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Loved the suspense in this episode. Fantastic voice acting by Lake Bell, Samuel L. Jackson, Mick Wingert, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner & Tom Hiddleston as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Nick Fury, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Clint Barton/Hawkeye & Loki, respectively. The supporting cast is unforgettable.

Episode 4, 10/10: What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands is the best episode of season 1. It even surpasses Doctor Strange(2016), on which the events take its inspiration, before going in a bold & dark new direction. This episode will make you really emotional & has several shocking moments. Benedict Cumberbatch & Rachel McAdams are awe-inspiring as Doctor Strange & Christine Palmer, respectively. The supporting cast is great.

Episode 5, 9/10: What If… Zombies?! Is arguably the most shocking episode of the season. It follows all the zombie genre tropes but, adds its own Marvel Cinematic Universe spin to it. There are many heartfelt moments in this episode & some interactions that I’m now craving to see in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe. Mark Ruffalo, Hudson Thames, Sebastian Stan, Jon Favreau, Evangeline Lilly, Danai Gurira, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, David Dastmalchian & Paul Rudd are brilliant as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Happy Hogan, Hope Van Dyne/Wasp, Okoye, T’Challa/Black Panther, Vision, Kurt & Scott Lang/Ant-Man, respectively.

Episode 6, 9/10: What If… Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark is a pretty good alternate take on Iron Man(2008). However, it doesn’t quite match up to its other alternate version; Black Panther(2018). Fans of the late Chadwick Boseman will be left teary-eyed after this episode. Michael B. Jordan, Mick Wingert, Chadwick Boseman & Andy Serkis are fantastic as Killmonger, Tony Stark/Iron Man, T’Challa/Black Panther & Ulysses Klaue, respectively. The supporting cast is effective.

Episode 7, 8/10: What If… Thor Were an Only Child? Is an alternate version of the events of Thor(2011). It’s just a fun filler episode with one memorable battle between two ultra powerful superheroes. Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston & Kat Dennings are incredible as Thor, Jane Foster, Loki & Darcy, respectively. The supporting cast is unforgettable.

Episode 8, 10/10: What If… Ultron Won? Is a dark alternate version of Avengers: Age of Ultron(2015). The action set pieces are eye-popping & the whole episode is an edge of the seat thrill ride. Ross Marquand perfectly emulates James Spader’s iconic voice, as Ultron. Lake Bell & Jeremy Renner are amazing as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow & Clint Barton/Hawkeye, respectively. The supporting cast is impressive. The second best episode of the season.

Episode 9, 10/10: What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath? Is the culmination of the entire season & has some jaw-dropping action set pieces that cannot be attempted in live-action. Hayley Atwell, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael B. Jordan, Lake Bell, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams, Ross Marquand & Toby Jones are superb as Peggy Carter/Captain Carter, Thor, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Gamora, Ultron & Arnim Zola, respectively. The third best episode of the season.

All in all, awesome first season. A must watch for all Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. Can’t wait for What If…? Season 2!
